Festival Zine

September 23, 2009 – 1:48 pm

I’m coming to  the end of posts based around August’s flurry of illustration bits and bobs. Above is a shot of a spread from a zine called Festival put together by Alan Wall in time for this years Electric Picnic. In the words of the man himself: “Our goal was to attempt to put our finger on the excitement and fun of festival-going, try to answer the question of why it’s so enjoyable and why we return year after year” .

I was lucky enough to be able contribute the illustrations  for the “Festival Law of Averages” story seen above. I was really happy with how it came out. Reckon it might make a great screenprint… hmm…

It’s a excellent project with some witty personal writing, top notch design (in fact it looks so slick that when my copy came through the letterbox I assumed I had inadvertently subscribed to some new glossy music magazine) and an exclusive six page story from Irish comics maestro Philip Barrett. It’s limited to 50 copies of the physical object but you can read the full thing online here. Alan has a few copies left over if you wish to purchase it and hopefully he might curate a similar project in the near future.

Loads more pics of the zine from Alans flickr account can be seen here. And a larger details of the illustrations are beneath the cut.

New story preview, Thought Bubble blog

September 15, 2009 – 2:45 pm

I’ve just finished a new 4 page story for (the ever industrious) Cliodhna Lyons’ upcoming anthology which is being prepared in time for this years Irish 24 hour Comic Day. It looks like she’s putting on a first rate event this year with Childrens Books Ireland making it part of their Childrens Book Festival. Anyway I’m only posting a very small exerpt because I don’t want to spoil anything before the actual comic comes out. I really enjoyed the inking on this one going back to the  grey-tone styles of Last Bus, which incidentally, I have actually started drawing pages for the second issue. Finally.

28thaugust-2In other news, the folks over at the Thought Bubble Festival in Leeds ran a nice blogpost on me in their “Friends of Thought Bubble” series. Thanks guys. Thought Bubble is a top class UK convention with a lot of love for the independent/small press scene. You should go if you get the chance.

Keith Moon

Another illustration from the Drop-d site. Keith Moon, Moon the Loon. I spent the weekend watching The Who film The Kids Are Alright and took the drawings from several stills of a The Who performing “My Generation” sometime in the mid seventies. Now, a lot of The Who’s music I can take or leave, but trying to capture the beautiful, frenetic, kinetic, gleeful energy that Keith Moon brought to playing drums isn’t an easy challenge. What a performer. Three drawings in ink, colourised and overlaid in photoshop.
