Work in progress, Week 3

October 29, 2009 – 5:33 pm

Woah, I’m sitting here working away and listening to This Town Needs Guns wishing I was a teenager again and could get into this stuff without feeling guilty at the angst and I suddenly realise that I haven’t posted anything to my weekly work in progress series. I’m sure you don’t want to see the lovely annual report that I’m typesetting here, so here’s a couple of pages from a recent sketchbook. An initial sketch for the Les Paul tribute I did a couple of months back and some random heads and faces drawn while on my lunch break in a cafe.

Independents' Day 2009

October 27, 2009 – 10:15 pm

Independents Day 2009 poster

Here’s a poster that I did for Independents Day 2009. It’s the finished artwork from the first work in progress post that I put up the week before last. Independent’s Day is a fair celebrating the work of DIY zines, record labels and comics. There are gonna be loads of stalls, workshops and some screenings of independently made films. Should be a great day altogether. Stall it along, yeah?

Work in progress, Week 2

October 22, 2009 – 6:14 pm

This week, I’m posting a couple of pages from a story that I was working on for an anthology submission to coincide with Design Week in Waterford. Link here. I missed the deadline in the end but will probably include the story in the next issue of Last Bus or another volume of Stop Gap. Still need to do the colours, some lettering touch ups and the title, but the guts of it is there. I tried a slightly simplified style for the drawing, inking purely with my new trusty brush pen. Anyway hope you enjoy it:

Lynyrd Skynyrd

October 20, 2009 – 12:00 pm

Another piece for Drop-d. Lynyrd Skynyrd, several of whose members died in lane crash on the 20th October 1977. Great band, classic southern rock. I kind of dashed this one off pretty late last night, and was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t look like a total mess in the cold light of day.

Oh yeah, 24 Hour Comics Day went great. Cliodhna put on a top class event with workshops, talks and generally great promotion. We had Ronan Kennedy beaming in from Australia, Bob Byrne from Spain both thanks to the modern miracle of Skype and loads of visitors over the course of the day peeking their heads in. Comics-wise, for me, it was marginally more successful than last year. I only did 5 pages, but at least it was a complete story. I’ll scan it, clean it up and post it later.

Work in progress, Week 1

October 15, 2009 – 10:43 am

In an effort to post more regularly to this blog, each Thursday I’ll be posting some piece of a work in progress whether it’s a comic page, illustration or a peek inside my sketchbooks.

This week, the preliminary pencil illustration for a poster I’m working on today. Check it:

Don’t forget Irish 24 Hour Comics Day is this Saturday. Looks to be a great day.
